Officials from the three political parties have joined forces in a committee to push for the introduction of divorce in Malta.

Labour MP Evarist Bartolo and Nationalist MP Jeffrey Pullicino Orlando, together with Alternattiva Demokratika chairman Michael Briguglio, are among the committee members for the group named ‘Iva’.

The committee will co-ordinate the campaign in favour of Dr Pullicino Orlando’s divorce Bill, due to be discussed in Parliament and expected to be presented in a referendum later.

The Bill proposes to permit divorce for couples who have been separated for a minimum of four years. Malta and the Philippines are the only two countries with no divorce legislation.

Michael Falzon, Marlene Mizzi, Yvonne Ebejer Arqueros, David Micallef St John, Roderick Bartolo, Etienne Borg and Martin Scicluna are the other members of the committee, chaired by Deborah Schembri.
