German flag carrier Lufthansa said it had no plans to change the flight schedules for its A380 super jumbos after a European safety agency ordered additional checks on their Airbus engines.
Preliminary analysis showed that an oil fire may have caused an “uncontained failure” of the Rolls-Royce Trent 900 engine on a Qantas flight last week, forcing it to make an emergency landing, EASA said.
The agency said it therefore “requires repetitive inspections” of certain parts of the engine “in order to detect any abnormal oil leakage, and if any discrepancy is found, to prohibit further engine operation”.
Lufthansa said it would implement EASA’s instructions “immediately”.
The firm said in a statement it would “use the time the A380s are on the ground in Frankfurt. The checks will therefore have no impact on planned Lufthansa A380 operations.” Lufthansa said on Wednesday it was changing an engine on one of its three Airbus A380 planes but that it was unrelated to oil leaks detected by other carriers.
