Mark Sammut set three new national short course marks recently while swimming in the West Region Championships in Millfield, England.

Sammut, under the guidance of former Olympics swimmer Robin Brew, broke the minute barrier in the 100m backstroke when he covered the distance in 59.19 seconds, 1.33 seconds faster than his own previous best set last month.

The second record was in the 100m butterfly when he registered a time of 58.46 seconds which bettered his previous limit of 58.88.

Sammut then went on to erase the long-standing 200m backstroke record of Christian Gialanze of 2:13.08, set 16 years ago, when he stopped the watches on 2:11.07.
