The argument put forward by the Ministry for Infrastructure, Transport and Communications for charging higher fares for non-residents is not completely valid.

Non-resident pensioners, students and schoolchildren will not be eligible to lower fares while the operating subsidy is something that has been agreed on.

This subsidy should be reflected in the prices of the tickets paid by all passengers. As it stands, it would appear the non-resident ticket prices are subsidising those of residents. It should also be remembered that non-residents pay taxes in the form of VAT on their accommodation and most other items they buy or hire during their stay, these taxes being collected by the government.
