The thieves who burgled The Sterling Jewellers outlet in Borg Olivier Street, Mellieha last night, gained access into the shop from an adjacent vacant property, sources said this morning.

They forced open the door of the empty house and then removed stone slabs in the dividing wall to gain access into the shop. It is understood that they may have not entered Sterling Jewellers but grabbed whatever they could reach from the disused property. The alarm did not go off.

The police said the theft was discovered by a salesman when he opened the shop this morning. The salesman did not immediately realise that the shop had been burgled and thought that a wall had collapsed. The police were informed at around 9.40 a.m.

The area around the shop is monitored by CCTV cameras.

Thefts were carried out on Sterling Jewellers outlets in Sliema and St Julians earlier this year.
