The Federation for Hunting and Conservation - Malta (FKNK) has submitted a report to the European Commission on the September 2010 bird-migration over the Maltese islands, with special reference to the Raptor Camps held by the German Komitee gegen den Vogelmord (CABS) and their local partners BirdLife Malta (BLM).
It said the report gave a general picture and established the facts of the situation in Malta.
The report concluded inter alia that:
The migration of turtle-doves and quails in September 2010 over Malta was very poor, particularly that of the Quail, justifying yet again the European Court of Justice ruling that autumn hunting did not offer a satisfactory solution for Maltese hunters.
Although much remained to be done, there was no doubt that the situation concerning the safe passage of migrant birds, especially raptors, over the Maltese Islands had improved considerably, the report says. Existing hotspots of illegal activity by a handful of poachers had been pinpointed, and for these to be eliminated, more collaboration between hunters and police, as well as cooperation from other conservationists was needed.
A copy of the report was sent also to Prime Minister Lawrence Gonzi, the Maltese Permanent Representative in Brussels, the Leader of the Labour Party Dr. Joseph Muscat, The Bureau of the Sustainable Hunting Intergroup c/o MEP John Attard Montalto, and the Federation of Associations for Hunting & Conservation in the EU (FACE).
