Air Malta launches baggage pass vouchers
Air Malta has launched baggage pass vouchers for customers who required additional weight to the standard allowance offered free by the airline.
Air Malta said in a statement that passengers travelling in economy class were entitled to 20 free kilogrammes while those in club class were entitled to 30 free kilogrammes.
Customers are now able to purchase pre-paid booklets of 10, 20 or 30 coupons. Each coupon is equivalent to five kilogrammes. A booklet of 10 coupons costs €300 and gives its bearer 50 kilogrammes excess weight as well as 500 Flypass KMiles. The 20 coupon booklet, at €500, gives its bearer an additional 100 kilogrammes and 1,500 Flypass KMiles. The 30 coupon booklet, aimed at corporate clients gives bearers 150 kilogrammes extra weight and 2,500 Flypass KMiles. Coupons in the latter booklet are transferable.
The baggage pass vouchers can be purchased from Air Malta’s Sales Office at Malta International Airport at least seven days prior to the intended date of usage. Each booklet is valid for one year from the date of issue.
Vouchers are to be presented at Air Malta check-in desk and each one is valid for a one-way trip. They are not refundable and cannot be exchanged for cash. Certain conditions may apply.

Most airlines charge for luggage these days. They are making millions on that. I see nothing wrong with Air Malta charging for luggage, as part of their restructuring policy.

What AirMalta needs is to cut costs, such as free flights and feed the airline crew as approved or delays demand. Keeping the crew happy is the success of the company. Cut the Office Staff by half, now a days work is carried by IT which is faster. Others cannot carry the full days work and have to ask for help from out side for free or a promotion.

2 days ago i have checked the following flights to Marseille from 10 th December to 13 th December for 2 adults and an infant
Ryaniar to Marseille with 20 kg allowance 178 euros in all for 3 passengers!!
Airmalta to Marseille with 20kg allowance 950 euros!!!!!! unbeleivable!!!! if the difference was just few euros i might use our national airline but paying this huge differance is insane!!!!

yes you're right it is so cheap for Malta Marsielle and return with Ryanair, but to justify the price of Airmalta, it is a codeshare and one has to travel first to an airport in Germany (Munich or Frankfurt) and then another plane to Marsielle, as Airmalta does not operate a direct flight to Marsielle.

You must have got it wrong somewhere as Ryaniar baggage allowance is 15 Kgs and not 20Kgs. Besdies you forgot the shoving and pushing to get on the plane, the seats that do not recline, the food that you have to pay for, the dirty plane as it is not cleaned between flights etc. The price differential you mentioned is large, but so is the service received.

this means that Air Malta will enforce the 20 kilos limit. So those who are travelling by our national carrier will face extra fees if they are over weight something which in the past was not strictly adhere too. This is the first step towards the ineffienceny of the past to collect money.

As if people are going to buy such booklets at 500 euros!!
Yet another failed attempt to attract customers
I think AirMalta would sell even more if they were to sell individual coupons

I totally agree with you.... even the cheapest of booklets is expensive to buy as a whole !
Halluna Air Malta.... I think you should ask Ryanair how they make their profit if you want to have a success story.

You can already buy individual excess luggage through airmalta.com prior going to the airport and the cost is cheaper than the rate you pay at the check-in counter. Last January i bought online and it was EUR3 per kilo cheaper than the airport rate.

Mr Cachia,
I don't mean to lecture you but you cannot compare Air Malta's business model ( legacy carrier) with that of Ryanair (Low Cost). Air Malta needs to look at its inefficiencies in order to reduce costs. Increasing fees for customers ( such as charged by Ryanair for credit card, for luggage , well for anytthing) is not the strategy that legacy carriers normally pursue

Ghandu ma jafx bik il President ta Malta... ghax kieku kont tkun presenti ghal lewwel laqagha li saret ghar riforma tal Air Malta.
No one told Air Malta to use the Ryanair strategy to charge for each service it provides, but with the high fares that Air Malta has - dont you think that Air Malta has the so called "Ryanair hidden charges" ALREADY INCLUDED in the price of an airfare ??!
Air Malta needs to be careful as 31M loss is no joke.
I try to use Air Malta when i can... but if the price difference is alot... im sorry, i will do what my pocket tells me to do!
