The report Vandals Strike At Fgura Garden (November 5) explains that the Fgura local council has to fork out about €400 in damages after vandals broke nine glass orbs and detached a steel light pole in Patri Redent Gauci Garden.

The attack took place the previous Monday evening. The Friday before the attack took place, I had tabled a parliamentary question based on a number of complaints I had received from citizens living in the area asking the Minister for Justice and Home Affairs to close the Patri Redent Gauci playing field after 11 p.m. and to make sure that inspections are made by the police because of drug-related activities in the area and general lack of public order in the late hours.

The minister promptly answered my question, which question appeared in last Thursday’s sitting (three days after the attack). The part of the question relating to the closure of the playing field after 11 p.m. was directed towards another ministry. The minister replied to the second part of the question by stating that constant and regular police inspections are made in the area (PQ 20833).

Facts show the minister’s reply is definitely unsatisfactory. More needs to be done.

I sincerely urge the authori-ties to take heed of the Fgura residents’ concerns and worries.
