President Barack Obama today declared the US was on "the right path" to a better relationship with the Muslim world.

Standing next to Indonesia's President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono in Jakarta at the start of a whirlwind visit, Mr Obama said he had worked hard to repair frayed relations with the international Muslim community.

But he added he did not think "we're going to completely eliminate some of the misunderstandings and mistrust."

The president said he wanted to make sure America was "building bridges and expanding our interactions with Muslim countries."
