Flavia Pennetta trounced Coco Vandeweghe 6-1, 6-2 on Sunday to hand Italy their second straight win over the US and third Fed Cup title in five years. The win in California gave Italy an unassailable 3-1 lead in the match following victories for Pennetta and Francesca Schiavone in Saturday’s opening day of the best-of-five tennis final. It was the second consecutive year the Italians had routed the US in the final. Picture shows captain Corrado Barazzutti with (left to right) Schiavone, Pennetta, Sara Errani and Roberta Vinci.
