A drunken Bulgarian who broke the side view mirrors of eight cars was yesterday handed a suspended jail term.

Yasen Atanasov, 26, from Bulgaria admitted breaking eight mirrors of vehicles parked in Tourists Street, St Paul’s Bay, in the early hours of Sunday morning.

Police Inspector Paul Bond told the court that Mr Atanasov was very drunk at the time.

He said the police had received a number of reports from residents about someone making a racket and damaging cars and when the patrol officers arrived they caught him red-handed.

He added that the damage caused amounted to €1,000.

One of the victims happened to be Police Inspector Joseph Mercieca who was in court yesterday and accepted payment from Mr Atanasov for the damage done.

Magistrate Gabriella Vella, after considering the early guilty plea and the damage done, jailed him for 15 months suspended for four years and ordered him to pay back the rest of the damage.
