LED-producing company enjoying fast growth
A Maltese company which produces LED lights and has Airbus among its clients, announced plans for expansion today.
Mosta Technopark-based Smart Light Systems, will be taking on more people and increasing its exports, director Henry J. Borg told Prime Minister Lawrence Gonzi during a visit.
He said that during the recent global economic turmoil, the company continued investing in research and development to support the versatile product range of LED lighting solutions. The company is anticipating an increase of 51% in export sales over last year.
Dr Gonzi said that Smart Light Systems was yet another confirmation of Malta’s potential in high value-added manufacturing.
Smart Light Systems offers some of the most effective ways to save money on electricity bills, with a 1 Watt LED (light emitting diode) producing the same amount of light as a 20-Watt halogen bulb. Translated into Euro, each SmartLight Systems LED saves the consumer anything between €20 to €25 each year on each bulb, resulting in savings of up to an average €500 every year on the electricity bill of a small business using 20 bulbs.
Smart Light Systems was set up in 2008 as a subsidiary of Sicons Opto Products to oversee the marketing of these new products and to exploit new markets.
The Company has manufactured LED components that have even made it to qualify for the high standards imposed by Airbus - their latest aircraft, the A380, includes ‘Made in Malta’ LED components.

Expanding at the expense of the taxpayer.

Mr Fenech,
Can you enlighten us on how you reached this conclusion?
Contrary to your belief, I see a hard-working family who has weathered the storm with little or no help - simply by being innovative and by diversifying.
how does the taxpayer come into this ??

It really takes a lot of technology to assemble an LED array on a PCB board. Is this the value adding indusry we are luring to Malta. U halluna. Had the LED's I mean the actual single LED's been manufactured in Malta that would be a reason to celebrate. In China and India they can do this at a fraction of the cost unless our European politicians start serioulsy defending European Jobs and seriously ensuring to execute their predicaments such factories will be long gone two to three years down the line.
Good luck to the employees. There Are few as good as the Maltese around the world.

@ A Zahra....it seems that you are one of the few who get their daily news in small doses rather than the full story.
Had you read the times newspaper today or watched the news yesterday you would have known that this company is not just manufacturing, but researching and developing the products which they are manufacturing.
Producing of parts is just 25% of the work to be done on a finished product. In my opinion if this is the kind of investment we are bringing in to Malta then it really IS something to be proud of.
Oh, and you referred to China products....the article also mentioned that we need to clamp down on non-EU conform products entering our shores.
If you also bother to see the news and not just splurdge comments bluntly you would also know that over the last months many Chinese manufacturing companies are closing and seeking relocation to EU countries!
just thought I would point it out .....education is always important I think...

Very good news to hear that a Maltese company has invested and succeeded to compete with other overses companies. We Maltese have good brains and do not need any consultants which absorbs a lot of money. These companies are to be helped when needed to invest more by which growth in employment takes place. Keep it up .

May Smart Light Systems continue to expand its business signature worldwide. Its also interesting to read that the A380 flies with LEDs developed and produced by this company. May these women workers here be proud of their work and their contribution to the Maltese economy. This company has also hit the headlines on a previous occasion, here. http://www.timesofmalta.com/articles/view/20100604/local/bir-miftuh-chapel-goes-green Nice, all the best to Smart Light Systems.
