Inspectors start another round of evictions at Golden Bay barracks
Inspectors from the Lands Department escorted by the police this morning started another round of evictions from the former barracks overlooking Golden Bay.
A spokesman said that 38 eviction notices were served last month for the properties near Manikata and the process to reclaim the government-owned properties started this morning.
There were no incidents, but some of the rooms were found to be locked, and one of the rooms had been torched.
The spokesman said that the rooms had been used for anything from summer houses to 'homes' for animals. Most were emptied after the eviction notices were served.
Other rooms were evicted last year.

Why are you all making a fuss about a few abandoned derelict rooms and disused public land while someone at Safi has used prime real estate public land, for years rent free and houses refugees, on the pretence of being used as a "Peace Lab"? While homeless Maltese people have to squat somewhere?

What squalor. Is it possible people could live like this? Even if its only for the summer. Hardly fit for animals either.

Well done, indeed. Congratulations, Lands Department.
But this is another instance of two weights, two measures.
For the umpieth time, Lands Department Inspectors SHOULD visit Sir Luigi Preziosi Square-Floriana, and evict the various heavy vehicles that are REGULARLY being parked day and night in this residential area even under the balconies of private homes.
These trucks and containers are obstructing the possibility of parking besides being a terrible nuisance to families, the Turkish Embassy, the Japanese Consulate, the Tug Malta offices and potential causes of serious accidents.
WHERE IS THE RULE OF LAW? WHER IS THE LOCAL COUNCIL? WHERE ARE THE WARDENS? WHERE ARE THE POLICE AUTHORITIES? WHERE IS THE LANDS DEPARTMENT?

I agree with P. Attard. If what he says is true and steps are not taken, I tend to believe that whoever's responsible is in cahoots with the perpetrators. Come on Jason. Show us what you're made of!

By next week they will be occupied again with squatters and their animals. Same story happened in the ditch at St.Clement Bastion in Cospicua. A few days after the evictions the squatters where back. Some say with the blessing of an official from the Lands Department.

now armier.. The eviction from these barracks is well and good, but I`m sure they could be used properly not just locked up, and probably broken back into. Also lands department must clearly show the population which land is private and which is public... nomore RTO on public paths and public land

Before I leave this world, may I be granted the opportunity to use one of the pathways that from Dingli lead to the sea?

I agree, when are police taking action on these RTO signs. We were once shouted at for stepping down the pathway that leads to fomm ir rih bay, how can you even think of owning an entire beach?

Hey Lands Dept, how about also looking at historical sites?
In Cospicua, on the way up to San Gwann t'Ghuxa, there are dogs in the rooms in the bastions (close to the area being restored). The dirt can easily be seen flowing down by the bastion wall (green sludge).
Then, in Valletta, the Gardjola between the Auberge de Bavierre and the Ware Museum, seems to house some turkeys or similar animals as these can easily be heard from the street.
These are surely Govt. and Public property!

This is good but must persistent. It has also to be just.
So, all those who by some means are occupying public land, whoever they and wherever they are, be it on cliffs, near the sea etc etc must also be evicted. Justice has to be done but also seen to be done.

Prosit ... this is good work, but it's on a relatively "small" scale
...the big "battle" will happen in Armier. When will the government tackle the horrible settlements in Armier?
Josehph Ccalleja

that will never happen. Too many relatives have boat houses over there and too many votes to lose. Might as well accept the fact that boat houses at Armier are there to stay.

next logical step opening up all the pathways in the likes of bahrija dingli cliffs etc, which used to be open to the public and have been abusevly closed off.any title to the land should be verified for its legality

Tajjeb hafna qed jghamlu tal-lands Department ghax dak li mhux tieghek qatt ma' tista tghamlu tieghek. Anzi tal-Lands messhom jaraw dak ir-raba li hemm sieden mitlufa fuqu u qed jintuza minn nies b'xejn. Kieku jiehdu il-Gvern jista jdahhal xi haga mill-kera tieghu ghal pajjiz. Hemm bzonn li is-Segretarju parlamentari jiehu hsieba din il-haga wkoll. Zomm l-infurzar fuq kulhadd forsi xi darba ngibuh floku dan il-pajjiz. M'ahniex daqshekk kbar biex issir din il-haga.

It must be the end of Summer and the evacuation squad is on the move, again. De ja vu all over again. Why is the government playing this game, every year after Summer we go through this evacuation routine. They pick some easy tasks, roll out the bulldozer etc and make headlines.
" Most were emptied after the eviction notices were served. Other rooms were evicted last year."
Why is this headline news? It would have been news if the squatters were made to pay for the eviction and cleaning expense otherwise what's new? Election approaching fast?

Every action meant to free public property from illegal use is very welcome. No one should be aloud to take a free ride at the expense of the honest citizen who is not willing to arrogantly take over prime locations like this one. These actions are commendable, kudos to the Lands Department and PS Azzopardi.

Again, another show of force by the Lands Department.
Don't take me wrong, those who have no right for the rooms should not be allowed to take by force what is not theirs.
However, and this is the same case as for many other government properties, unless a fixed use is found for these rooms, squatters will move in again!
Can with some investment these rooms be turned into something practical, that can be enjoyed by the general public?
These rooms managed to stay in a shabby, but still standing state. The same cannot be said for many other sites, like the Selmun Barracks, or the rooms at the other end of the promontory where the Red Tower stands.
If there is no use, these will be either turned into dumps or taken aback by squatters, or else will fall to pieces.
Come on, if we have to do something, let's do it right all the way, with a long term plan rather than a nice photo opportunity and a headline which won't be there the day after!!!
