Drunk Bulgarian damages eight cars
A 26-year old unemployed Bulgarian man damaged eight cars while he was drunk early yesterday, a court was told this morning.
Yasen Atanasov admitted to causing some €1,000 worth of damages to the cars parked along Triq it-Turisti before he was arrested. One of the cars belonged to a police inspector.
The damage consisted mostly of broken door mirrors and scratches.
The man was arrested on site.
He was condemned to a 15-month jail term suspended for four years and ordered to pay for the damages.
The man has already paid one of the car owners.

I feel I have the need to relate to the readers that the victims in question, apart from the member of the police corps who received compensation, are still awaiting compensation from the bulgarian for the crimes committed.

Malta is a small country and it should be easy to control. As we can see the people in power are not doing there job to protect the future and integrity of this country.

Mr Robert Azzopardi,
Are you related to this drunk Bulgarian? or maybe a friend? or perhaps his lawyer?
The suspense is killing us, and we are eagerly awaiting your reply!

Lets hang this bulgarian bum from the highest tree. actually he deserves a much slower death, but he's not worth the trouble.

It seems that the fact that this foreigner was drunk is somehow overlooked. The problem is alcohol abuse and the way alcohol renders people expose their violent side. Alcohol is easily available here in Malta to the extent that even 15 year old kids can purchase unlimited amounts of alcoholic beverages without being questioned. My point is some regulations by the government should be revisted. ( Eventhough, by saying this I believe they won't since there is big business behind these affairs.)

@C.Busuttil.I employ Russians,Chinese,Serbs and many other nationals including Maltese.Believe me there is no difference whatsoever with nationalities and in all boils down to skills.Morover if you are one of those who voted for EU membership please add the Bulgarians to your list of English and Germans as they are of the same category of EU members.

WHEN !!!! are the Maltese going to get their priorities right. This article has 14 comments. YET an article on "Offenders register" gets 4 comments. What is more important protecting our children and vunerable adults, or wasting time worrying how this man can afford to live in Sliema who,s business is it where this man lives, he could be living with a Maltese Partner as many foreigners do. SO........... stop worrying about things you can do nothing about, START worrying about things YOU can do something about. i.e. Protecting your children from preditors.

Can the authorities investigate how these foreigners can afford to rent appartments in Sliema which surely are not cheap. We are not speaking about English or German people but Bulgarians, Russians, Chinese, Serbs etc
It neither appears they do have jobs that can permit them to pay certain rents, let alone water and electricity!!!!!!!!
It does not take a genius to figure out that something does not make sense or better it makes sense when you thing what might be behind all.

It appears the inferiority complex so prevalent amongst the Maltese is biting somebody particularly hard, here, as exemplified by the above comment. If your job's worse than mine (I'm a Russian doctor), or your education lacks, and so you cannot afford living in Sliema, there's still really no need to spew foam and tear hair -- jealousy kills, my dear.

he did mention the unemployed!! i expect anyone who's a doctor to be living in a villa after a few years of practice with the money they earn, being a foreigner in your case has nothing to do with what c busutill said

send him back to where he came from. I do not want my hard earned taxes to go to bums like this. I would prefer if they went to deserving maltese. Do we have to put up with this scum?

Seems to me that being a member of the European Union has just allowed all sorts of dodgy people from all sorts of dodgy countries to freely come here to steel, vandalise and Lord knows what else they get up to. Can't we go back to how it was before!!!

unemployed... or working in a construction site illegally?
So what is he doing here...(if unemployed)?
Are we paying for unemployed foreigners too now? -
such criminals should be expelled from the country...

Unemployed my foot. Obviously the guy is most probably working in the construction industry. EU or not he should be investigated to see how he's managing to live off nothing. In Italy and I'm sure other countries as well someone like him would be placed under observation.

Shouldn't people like these are permitted to stay on the premise that they can sustain themselves or at least have a steady job. Next thing we will be flooded by " Europeans" coming here to live off the country.

Unemployed but plenty of money available to get drunk - yeah pull the other leg, this guys getting money from somewhere (probably illegally).
I believe this sort of nasty wilful damage should get a jail term (to act as a deterrent, not a 'slap on the wirst'). Thia is just another daft suspended sentence - what a mickey mouse system it is in Malta.
Robert Azzopardi
Nov 8th 2010, 15:48
I'm sorry, but who are you exactly??? "this guys getting money from somewhere (probably illegally)." How can you even speculate that way about a person you read of in a news portal?
Are you also a Magistrate or Judge perhaps? You do know that all criminal offences have stipulated penalties right? And I do hope you do not expect anything but a suspended sentence for what is, yes an offence, but a rather minor one too.
@Charmaine Marmara, I have seen Maltese teenagers doing exactly the same thing in Swieqi side streets, actually damaging more than eight cars as they would begin at one end of the street, smashing each mirror as they walk to the other end
@Frank Grech, '' an unemployed Bulgarian man'' there are Maltese in Employment who perhaps wouldn't be able to pay either but really that is totally beyond the point!
@timesofmalta.com, I honestly, once again, see absolutely no relevance in mentioning the nationality of the man, neither do I see it relevant to mention his employment status. It is absolutely redundant unless you deliberatly want to spark off comments like the ones below.

Robert Azzopardi - That is, unfortunately, how the media works. If only they could find the person had a limping left leg, it would make a better headline as well!!

what difference does it make if its a police officers car or not , still damaged right??
"The man has already paid one of the car owners." might have a guess on who the one man was.....and to the drunk bulgarian guy "pls go get drunk and damage things in your own country" ty

"pls go get drunk and damage things in your own country"
This is as much his country as any other EU country.
It just makes me wonder how an unemployed person can afford to travel to another country, pay the rent, live, get drunk and pay for damages.
