Family Minister Dolores Cristina told Noel Farrugia (PL) that there were 22,648 families who received children allowances, of whom 4,157 of the recipients were unmarried mothers.

There were 18,627 other families that received a fixed rate children’s allowance as they exceed an annual income of €23,923. Of these 113 were unmarried mothers.

Answering a series of questions by the same MP, Mrs Cristina said that there were 2,940 families and unmarried mothers who received an allowance because there were members suffeering from diabetes. Of these, 19 men and a woman receive social benefits for single parents.

There were 6,665 recipients in malta and 787 in Gozo of social benefits because of high blood pressure.

Mrs Cristina said that between January and October, 1,994 women received maternity benefits. Of these 656 were single mothers.
