Gozo Bishop Emeritus Nikol Cauchi’s medical condition improved after he experienced severe breathing problems two days ago.
The 81-year-old bishop’s condition was still serious but had stabilised after he had trouble breathing on Saturday and had to be given assistance to breathe.
Mgr Cauchi was admitted to Mater Dei Hospital on October 28 suffering from pneumonia and heart failure. The day before he went to Gozo General Hospital complaining of shortness of breath. It was then decided to airlift him to Malta to be treated for a chest infection. He was placed on a ventilator and was initially under sedation. Although initially in a critical condition, Mgr Cauchi slowly recovered.
Mgr Cauchi was talking freely with visitors and hospital staff last Friday before facing a setback during the night.
