I find it unbelievable that the Bishop of Gozo, Mgr Mario Grech, found it appropriate to make his controversial statement about contraception on the day he did. It was the day after the men allegedly abused by priests as orphans, at St Joseph’s Home at Sta Venera, had their case sent to the Vatican for adjudication.
Also, does he realise his statement is exposing people to the dangers of sexually transmitted diseases, unwanted pregnancies and all the awful consequences, AIDS included?
Ironically, he made his comments at a conference to commemorate the 25th anniversary of the opening of a Gozitan home for unmarried mothers, kicked out of their homes because of their pregnancy.
As a family doctor, it has always been my principle to teach prevention, to educate and inform patients fully about medical matters, including contraception.
Finally, my heart leaps out to my former Royal Army Medical Corps colleague, Philip Carabot, the head of the GU Clinic in these islands.
His excellent work, total dedication and enthusiasm for his job are being sabotaged by such comments as the ones made by the Gozo Bishop.
