A wreath-laying ceremony to mark the 62nd anniversary of one of the worst sea tragedies, in which 23 people drowned, was held at the monument at Żewwieqa, Mġarr, last Sunday.

Among those placing flowers was Marija Portelli, 81, sister of George Curmi, the youngest person who lost his life. He was 17.

Qala archpriest Joe Zammit celebrated Mass on board the Ta’ Pinu ferry at the site of the tragedy.

Relatives and friends threw flowers into the sea near Ħondoq ir-Rummien Bay as a mark of respect.

The incident happened onOctober 30, 1948, when a luzzu carrying 27 passengers attempted to cross from Marfa to Gozo in bad weather. The boat overturned and only four survived.
