St Margaret College Girls Secondary School, Cospicua, recently celebrated the European Day of Languages by holding two days of activities organised by the school’s language departments.

On the first day, students held an activity commemorating the life and work of the national poet, Dun Karm Psaila.

Form 5 students read a short biography of the poet’s life and explained the origins of the national anthem. A wooden commemorative inscription of the national anthem was then unveiled and placed in the school foyer.

The unveiling ceremony was attended by the Ministry of Education’s Parliamentary Assistant Stephen Spiteri, as well as Education Officer for Maltese David Agius Muscat and St Margaret College principal Stephen Cachia.

The next day, students were shown a Powerpoint presentation about the European Day of Languages.

Later that day, another presentation was made to Form 1 and 2 students about the linguistic and cultural aspects binding France, Germany, Italy and Spain.

There was also a culinary activity. Staff and students of the French department organised a French breakfast for the students, Mr Cachia, and the senior management team. The students followed instructions in French to prepare the food.

The European Day of Languages is organised by the Council of Europe and the EU to promote language diversity in Europe and encourage the learning of languages.

It involves millions of people across Europe and every year schools are encouraged to organise events to celebrate this day and its aims with their students.
