Gozo Bishop Emeritus Nikol Cauchi is slowly on the mend and it is possible he would be taken out of Mater Dei Hospital’s intensive therapy unit today.

The 81-year-old is no longer on a ventilator and has been talking and joking with those around him.

Mgr Cauchi was admitted to Gozo General Hospital on October 27 complaining of shortness of breath and was later transferred to the Mater Dei Hospital to be treated for a chest infection. He placed on a ventilator and was initially under sedation.

He was initially in a critical condition but recovered slowly.

A family member said he wished to relay his thanks to the hospital staff and the public for their support.

All comments under the articles about his condition on timesofmalta.com were read out to him and Mgr Cauchi expressed his gratitude for all the prayers and well-wishers.
