I could not agree more with Alfred Formosa in his letter Divorce Campaign A Disservice To Country (November 2). A representative of the people is elected to act on their behalf according to the electoral manifesto and not to throw this overboard and carry out a hidden agenda.

An honorable person will not abuse the trust that the electorate and the party has placed in him/her even if they happen to be at an advantageous stage of our history.

This is the reason to my mind why we common citizens address these gentlemen and women as “Honorable”.

Everyone has his/her hurts but it is a truly callous act to try and self serve with that which, though one might be in a position to obtain, in reality one has no moral right to. The rebel boy must thank his lucky stars that we are living in a somewhat more enlightened time than two decades ago, though occasionally the news reaches us that an estranged husband has taken the law into his hands with fatal consequence for the adulterer.

Saying this I would add that no, I do not agree that references to adultery should be struck out of our statute book.

The present Administration, ably led by Lawrence Gonzi, was voted in power to uphold our society’s values, not to water them down.

The electorate trusted this government because it espouses a different set of values than the others on offer at the last election which either did not make it to Parliament or remained on the opposition benches.

I sincerely hope that the slim majority so painstakingly obtained is not frittered away through capitulating to those pushing for divorce. Concerned citizens will forgive a lot of the burdens trust upon their shoulders through taxation, regulations and what have you, but they will not stand idly by and see their treasured values trashed by a once promising young politician or those who desert our successful, job-creating Prime Minister and his loyal collaborators, for empty and costly mirages of paradise overflowing with gentle, unsuspecting maids, which in reality enslave women, children and men.
