Ceremony recalls Italian war dead in Malta
The Italian ambassador this morning led a wreath-laying ceremony at Kalkara Military Ceremony to recall Italian servicemen who died in Malta in the Second World War.
The commanders of the Italian Military Mission and the Armed Forces of Malta were present.
The ceremony coincided with Italian Armed Forces Day.
Italian war losses in Malta were mostly airmen, but some sailors also died here, notably sailors who took part in the failed attack on the breakwater bridge. Last week the government announced an allocation of funds for the bridge to be rebuilt.
Most of the remains of the Italian servicemen buried in Malta were returned to Italy in the 1960s.

I salute those heroes who gave their life to liberate Malta from the Usurpation of British Armed Forces of Occupation.
A Mass will be held on November 28th to commemorate the sacrifice of Carmelo Borg Pisani in a church in Valletta, more details later on next week.

My grandad is still alive, not sure if he was on duty tough. He was stationed at bubaqra on a height finder. Well his stories say I guess.

Is it still politically incorrect for the Italian military to remember especially Carmelo Borg Pisani?

To be accurate the so called sailors were elite soldiers from the X Mas, many of them veterans from other battles and including also Mgr Tessei, the designer of the 'Maiale' SLR, the human torpedo vessel. He and his co-pilot were KIA by Maltese gunners from Frt St Elmo as they tried to penetrate the Grand Harbour.
May they RIP, tough they were our foe they still were gallant servicemen who fought for their country.

The guns used from St Elmo were E[Lance Bdr. Bugeja, F [Sgt Barbara] and G [Sgt Zammit, D was in reserve, From Ricasoli other guns were deployed with A [Sgt Bonnett], B [Sgt Attard] and C[Capt Fiteni]. The men were from the RMA, commanded by Col.Henry Ferro [StElmo]
Was incorrect the Maiaile was called SLC, two were deployed for the attack, Tesei was KIA, Costa who commanded the other had trouble in the rudder and ended opposite, scuttled it and both the crew were taken POW at St Julians. The RMA guns also engaged the other MTS and MTM boats that tried to attack the entrence after the suicide attack by Carabelli that destroyed the metal net and the bridge but still obstructed entrance of the other boats.
I recommend the book The Battle of the Grand Harbour by J.Caruana for further details.
