US ambassador Douglas Kmiec has said voter impatience with the economy was the main factor that led to the Republican Party taking control of the US House of Representatives in yesterday’s mid-term congressional elections.

Interviewed by Anthony Manduca Prof. Kmiec said he believed President Barack Obama would be able to work with the Republican-controlled House of Representatives and said he did not believe this election would lead to any changes in US foreign policy.

The ambassador said the election result was not a referendum on President Obama and noted that the Democratic Party managed to hold on to its majority in the Senate. He said many voters had voted on local issues and the economic situation varied from state to state.
