Suspended jail term for government employee who insulted columnist
A government employee was given a three-month jail term suspended for 12 months for insulting columnist Daphne Caruana Galizia through flyers.
Magistrate Audrey Demicoli found Lawrence Galea of Zabbar guilty of distributing flyers showing Ms Caruana Galizia’s face and insulting words around the University in February 2008.
The flyers were printed on paper with the government's watermark.
The case was first brought to the attention of police by a woman who noticed Mr Galea driving around the university ringroad and throwing the flyers out of the car.
Ms Caruana Galizia herself later filed a formal complaint to police.

Din mhix gustizzja. Li student li ghadu daqxejn ta` tifel jaghmel kif hafna studenti universitarji jaghmlu-anke jien kont student universitarju- xi haga hazina, pero azgur minghajr intenzjoni ta reat ghandu jigi ikkastigat b`DAN IL-MOD. Ghandu jigi reprimand/ imwissi mill-qorti biex darba ohra jgib ruhhu ahjar. Biex tghaqaddha l-attur f'`dina il-kawza xebbet tikteb u tikkritieka nies bl-iktar mod mhux eddukat u xejn inqas civili. Il-qorti immissa rat ukoll il-background tal-persuna involuta. Biex tkun kriminal m`hemmx ghalfejn toqtol jew tferri lil xi hadd. Biex tisgronza trid tkun pur jghid the Maltese idiom my friend.

L. Galea should have been made to pay Daphne compensation for the insults received.

this man should be thrown out of the public service. Littering the roads, using government property (paper and ink) and insulting a citizen are two henious crimes which should never carry a suspended sentence.

Some people get really irritated when someone else target them! What about those people who get targeted all the time, in the media, for unspecific reasons!!!!! I just wonder why!!!

People may sometimes be under the weather and do things without thinking. Let he or she who is without fault throw the first stone.

You are right Camilleri. This is not to excuse these things but I know of a person who did something which he would never have done had he not been passing through hell at the time. Don't judge for you will be judged.

OK. I'll wait for you to say that again next time you're the victim of a crime. Should we close down the law courts and pension off the judges too while we're at it?

M. Debono Christ told us to forgive as he himself did to those who crucified him.

Your are right Mr Schembri. Sometimes we wonder why people do things which do not seem rational and even commit suicide. Who knows what a person may be passing through although as you said these things should not happen. Maybe we need to turn more to God and pray to help everyone in need of our prayers.

The attitude of the accused reflects much of what is wrong with the public sector today. The government truly needs to vet it's employees better rather than just employing them because they have relatives in the public service.

Nice guy this Lawrence Galea. He should be made to pay for the paper and ink he used for these flyers. This is accountability and not just a suspended sentence.

Way back a government employee who was caught using a "Brown Manilla Envelope" of the department was suspended and charged before the PSC with a charge for DISMISSAL from the Government Service. The late Mr. Maurice Agius - Secretary General of the U.H.M and Mr. Salvinu Spiteri - President of the same Union defended this person because at that time for a person to be charged with such a minor offence was very ridiculous. Is it a case of two weights and two measures because as far as I am concerned the Estacode has not changed for such offences?

" and throwing the flyers out of the car" .In other civilized countries they call that littering and he should have been cited for that too.
I can understand the suspended sentence but why no community service added to the sentence?

Has he been charged with printing the flyers on government watermarked paper? How did he get hold of them, through his office of course!

If this individual is 63 . . how come he is a government employee, is it not time he is given a pat on the shoulder and a pension?
Are we also to understand that there was misappropriation of official government stationery?
What or who was behind his little bit of unofficial propaganda distribution ? Nobody does things like this without a reason, however frivolous . . . is there some personal issue between himself and Ms Caruana Galizia or was he motivated by something more sinister and external?

The case happened in 2008, so I think during that time he was still in the working age.
