Malta should be proud of its result – German minister
Photo: Simon Borg, DOI
Collaboration between Malta and Germany had increased in and some 50 German manufacturing companies currently operated here, employing some 2,240 employees.
This collaboration increased in the past five years, when 14 German companies set up new operations in Malta, Werner Hoyer, Minister of State at the Federal Foreign Office of Germany said this afternoon.
Speaking during a joint news conference with Foreign Minister Tonio Borg following bilateral talks, the German minister said that 17 German companies already located in Malta, had, through incentives offered by Malta Enterprise, expanded their operations on the island.
“It is significant for Malta that corporate brand names such as Playmobil, Lufthansa Technik and Deutsche Bank not only opted to invest in Malta, but also decided to expand their operations, despite the current international crisis.”
Dr Hoyer, whose visit succeeds that by German Foreign Affairs Minister Guido Vesterwelle in eight weeks, highlighted the fact that from among EU states, only Germany and Malta achieved growth and successful economic results over the past months.
“A small country like Malta should be proud of such a result, given its limitations due to the size,” he said.
Foreign Minister Tonio Borg said that Germany has supported Malta on a number of political and economic matters over the years.
He thanked Germany for its support in dealing with the influx of refugees over the past years.
Germany, he said, recognised the disproportionate burden being carried by Malta and around 130 refugees have left the country in search of a future in Germany.
During his two-day visit to Malta, Dr Werner Hoyer also met the pro-rRector of the University of Malta and addressed MEDAC students, among others.

There is no one more blind than the person who has eyes and refuses to see.
The anti-government ones will surely say that this applies to the German minister, and not to themselves. I am sure that there are many more persons who are capable to look with open eyes and see things for themselves, not through rose-tinted glasses, but nor blinded by destructive political bias.

One thing for sure, this news item came as a surprise to me, as usually high ranking visits are announced much beforehand. Earlier this week,on Sunday, I read that the German Chancellor Dr. Angela Merkel will also be visiting sometime in January, next year. I hope Dr. Werner Hoyer Minister of State at the Federal Foreign Office of Germany enjoyed his two day visit on the islands. The Maltese islands have their own history too.

@all PN bloggers The wages at Lufthansa Technik are very low, and the conditions of work are not that good. My brother works there as a technician and he has a very low wage. Do not be impressed with the Name Lufthansa Technik. The majority of the PN bloggers try to demonize Dr Muscat which in my opinion is a very big mistake. There was no union who criticized Dr Muscat budget speech because it was the TRUTH. Is it true that we the government made a drastic increase in the Fuel, alcohol, Cigarettes, and instead of giving the energy vouchers he deducted these vouchers which amount to 11million a year? Is it True that The government also made a first time buyer suffer most with the drastic increase in MEPA tarrifs followed by a drastic increase in Cement which surely will increase the property prices? Is it true that we had before the budget a drastic increase in the car licences which are increasing every year, Followed by a drastic increase in the gas cylinders? Dr Muscat is telling the truth and thousands of people are suffering.

No "Malta File" when the Labour Party in Opposition. The Labour Party and it's Leaders always upheld good international, financial and economic relations with who ever had Malta's interests at HEART and where never spoilsports or disrupted foreign investment to the island ! http://bezzul.tripod.com/mintoff4.html The final departure of the British troops from Malta marked also the end of financial assistance from that country. Malta depended as of that day, completely on its own efforts for survival and prosperity. The government did its utmost to maintain the steady progress that had been achieved in the previous few years. But a new menace faced the government, this time from within the country itself. In its efforts to win over popular support, the newly elected Nationalist Party leader Dr Eddie Fenech Adami, and his associates, embarked on an international campaign to smear Malta's name in the international community. The infamous Malta File was circulated by the Nationalists through a Maltese man working in the U.S. They mobilised their Demo-Christian allies in Europe convincing them that democracy was being threatened in Malta, and that Mintoff had become a dictator.

You must not hail from the Cottonera area where you couldn't buy a nationalist newspaper, were insulted just for holding a different view, burning of P.N Clubs was the norm,Zejtun was a no go area, free speech was a no no and PBS had a catchy tune...run rabbit run... Where you one of those militant aristocrats who thought that a nice day out was breaking and burning Shops,Courts/Curia/houses or did we live in different universes ? What dictatorship? Maybe you fancy the more polished version of dictatorship , a democracy as defined by Oscar Wilde - “Democracy means simply the bludgeoning of the people by the people for the people.” or the state-of-the-art version Gonzpn version of dictatorship - “Democracy means simply the bludgeoning of the people by the Finance Minister and his budget for the “chosen” which are more equal than others!.”
