Jeffrey Pullicino Orlando seems to have taken the whole issue of divorce onto his shoulders even though he well knows that neither he nor his party have the people’s mandate for its introduction. He is imposing his own timeframe for the debate on his Bill, even dictating the wording of the question to be put in any referendum which, according to him, must be held next year. He does this without taking into consideration the lack of the people’s mandate, the more urgent needs of the country and the expenses involved. He is performing a disservice to his constituents, his party and the country and is taking advantage of the government’s one-seat majority. But the people trust the handling of the situation in the safe hands of the Prime Minister, who is urged to stand firm whatever the outcome.

Dr Pullicino Orlando knows that a false move on his part will mean the end of his political career, if it is not too late already. He survived the Mistra saga thanks to the excellent handling of the situation by Dr Gonzi and Joe Saliba, which resulted in the PN winning the election. Perhaps his insistence on the introduction of divorce is a face-saving act to make up for the Mistra saga.

If Dr Pullicino Orlando succeeds in getting divorce introduced, I urge the Maltese people to erect a monument in his honour for his disservice to his constituents, his party and the country. Please, enough is enough.
