Bishop Emeritus Nikol Cauchi’s remains in a stable but still critical condition, the Department of Information said this evening.

Mgr Cauchi is in intensive care at Mater Dei Hospital after suffering a heart failure and chest infection.

The DOI said the bishop’s pneumonia is improving with the use of antiobitics and his breathing is being supported by a mechanical ventilator.

Mgr Cauchi, 81, went to the Gozo General Hospital on Wednesday complaining of shortness of breath and was kept for treatment.

He was eventually put on a ventilator and placed under sedation while in the cardiac unit. Mgr Cauchi was then transferred to Mater Dei Hospital on Thursday morning by helicopter.

Mgr Cauchi’s family has asked for his privacy to be respected.
