The problem is two-fold, the people even joke about *well-known drug traffickers*, and secondly, those caught consuming it never confess.
A law should be made to force the information out of them....or at least a good wiretapping program getting started...

It is amazing how the drug barons never get caught. Is it too difficult for the police to investigate peopele who get rich overnight. Why don't we have a law which orders banks to report cases of undeclared income.

Well done, Drug Squad!
Do not give up!
We are all four-square with you!

That's not true. The drug squad is doing an extremely poor job targetting users and not those who import and traffic. So we are defintely not all 'four-sqaure with them'.

dear mr. caruana you are right to say that the webmaster often omits comments and sometimes even whole write ups, especially on hot cases like these.
anyways the point is that these medicinal plants have been around almost forever and have been used and are still used in certain parts of the world in normal life. see cocaine in south america and cannabis in morrocco for instance.
the funny thing is that one of the first verses of the bible ~(genesis 1:28) says that god has given us all plants bearing seeds too use them as we like.
i beleive that most illicit substances where made illegal for just one purpose ............. to fuel the black economy and so certain people in high spheres could get rich and fast.
if these subsances were made legal and taxed there wouldn't be any need for pushers and trading in the streets. also the pure thing means that the product is not cut with any other bad substance and thus will reduce the overdose rates. does anybody know that portugal has been adopting this line for about 10 years now with huge success?

More money down the drain!!
These were all adults (19-34) who were found in POSSESSION, not trafficking.
The state looks like a control-freak who wants to decide for you what you can and cannot eat or smoke.
If the state cares for our health so much, then cigarettes should be abolished, soft-drink companies and fast food outlets should be heavily taxed and the working week should be reduced to 20 hours.
The worse killer in Malta (and all Western world) is not illicit drugs but Ischaemic heart disease whose risks increase with smoking, high cholesterol levels, diabetes and high blood pressure.

I agree with you, but from where are they to get enough cash for their hobby, are not all at risk.Follow what is going on in Mexico, do you want our country to end with cartels.

H Galea, I follow very closely what is going on in Mexico.
In Mexico there is a very serious war going on and it is fuelled by the drug cartels (not the users). You need to make a distinction between a user and a traficker.
One of the possible solutions mentioned in the Mexican parliament is in fact Legalisation and regulation of certain drugs.

No problem. We can always rehabilitate them, expenses for the process irrelevant. The public will always be ready to fork out the money. Don't we already do (free syringes available across the counter)?

Without those syringes available over the counter we would see an increase in HIV and other diseases.
