Gibbs: Arsenal defender Kieran Gibbs was ruled out for several weeks after suffering knee ligament damage in his side’s League Cup win against Newcastle. Gibbs sustained a medial ligament injury after 18 minutes at St James’ Park on Wednesday.

Ferrer: Albert Ferrer has been unveiled as the new coach of strugglers Vitesse Arnhem. The club confirmed the appointment yesterday, seven days after sacking Theo Bos following their disappointing start to the season. The 40-year-old former Barcelona and Chelsea full-back takes over with the club third from bottom in the Dutch top flight.

Jones: US midfielder Jermaine Jones is expected to miss Schalke 04’s match against Bayer Leverkusen tomorrow after he damaged ankle ligaments. The 28-year-old picked up the injury in his side’s 1-0 German Cup win over second division FSV Frankfurt in midweek.

De Rossi: Roma midfield dynamo Daniele de Rossi is hoping to play in next week’s Champions League group match against Basle. The 27-year-old has been out with a calf strain and has returned to training.

Zola: Gianfranco Zola is being linked with the job at Brescia, replacing Beppe Iachini after the newly-promoted team’s fourth successive defeat in the league. Club president Gino Corioni publicly criticised Iachini for the team’s downfall, fuelling reports of an imminent change.

Rugby Union: Former All Black great Tana Umaga has signed with the Waikato Chiefs to play Super 15 rugby next year, capping a remarkable return to New Zealand. Ice Hockey: Former Canadian junior hockey coach Graham James was arrested by police this week to faces charges of sexual assault. James, who is a convicted sex offender, was arrested at Toronto’s International Airport, and taken to Winnipeg, Manitoba where he faces nine charges of sex assault.

Boxing: Unbeaten former Olympic gold medallist Odlanier Solis will face Ray Austin in a non-title heavyweight fight with the winner earning the right to face WBC champion Vitali Klitschko. Solix (16-0, 12 Kos) will fight Austin (28-4-4, 18 Kos) at the AmericanAirlines Arena on December 17.

Baseball: Juan Uribe smacked a three-run home run to spark a six-run fifth inning and the San Francisco Giants outslugged Texas 11-7 on Wednesday to capture the opening game of the 106th World Series. Uribe’s blast helped the Giants seize command of the best-of-seven final, which has gone to winners of the opener in 11 of the past 13 years.

Basket, NBA: Miami’s Big Three won their first game as the trio combined for 61 points and the Heat spoiled Philadelphia’s home opener with a 97-87 win. Dwyane Wade scored a game-high 30 points while LeBron James (16) and Chris Bosh (15) did their part for the Heat.
