A man suffering from manic depressive psychosis was placed on probation after he was caught urinating in public at the airport.

The man, from Gudja, had pleaded guilty to urinating at Malta International Airport in October 2006.

He also admitted to threatening and insulting police officers and disobeying their orders. He was found guilty of slightly injuring a police officer, breaching the peace and using vulgar language in public.

Magistrate Saviour Demicoli heard how the man suffered from manic depressive psychosis and, on the day he committed the crime, had aggravated the problem with alcohol abuse. He also noted that the man, a cancer patient, was given medical treatment for his mental illness and had made “substantial progress”.

Magistrate Demicoli placed the man under a three-year probation order and fined him €1,746. He was ordered not to bother the police officers against a personal guarantee of €2,000. The court recommended he seeks professional psychiatric help and follows an alcohol rehabilitation programme.
