The EU’s statistical arm this morning said that Malta has managed to slash its annual unemployment rate by a full percentage point last September, the largest decrease registered among the 27 member states.

On the other hand, the average unemployment rate in the euro area in September continued to rise reaching 10.1 per cent, up from 9.6 per cent a year earlier.

Eurostat said that at 6.2 per cent, Malta had the fourth lowest unemployment rate in the EU. In September 2009, Malta’s unemployment rate stood at 7.2 per cent.

In September, the lowest unemployment rate in the EU was observed in the Netherlands - 4.4 per cent, while the highest (20.8 per cent) was registered in Spain.
