Two club officials and three fans of Ħamrun Spartans were banned from entering a football ground for three months after they admitted to taking part in a fight that broke out during a league match with Floriana.

Jason Cristina, 39, Ruben Balzan, 38, officials, and Stephen Sultana, 41, Nazareno Borg, 31, and Marius Scerri, 23, pleaded guilty yesterday to forming part of a group of people who were involved in the fight.

They ended up in court after they jumped the barriers during the match at the National Stadium in Ta’ Qali on October 17.

They followed Sandro Cauchi – another Ħamrun supporter – who had jumped the barriers after he disagreed with a number of decisions made by the referee during the match, which Floriana won 2-1. Mr Cauchi was arraigned separately, fined €250 and banned from frequenting any football ground for one year.

The five men pleaded guilty to disobeying police orders, breaching the peace and making rude gestures.

Magistrate Saviour Demicoli fined them €60 each and banned them from football grounds for three months.

Lawyers Giannella Caruana Curran and Stephen Tonna Lowell appeared for Mr Scerri.

Lawyers Josè Herrera and Veronique Dalli appeared for the other four men.
