Gozo bishop surprised by Mgr Cauchi condition, urges prayer
The Bishop of Gozo, Mgr Mario Grech, has described his predecessor Mgr Nikol Cauchi as a father figure and a teacher for the people of Gozo.
In brief comments this morning, Mgr Grech said that Mgr Cauchi's hospitalisation yesterday was a shock and he was urging the clergy and the people to pray for him.
He said that he had a long conversation with Mgr Cauchi last Sunday and he was still looking forward to projects which he planned to carry out.
See comments in full on video above.
Mgr Cauchi, 81, was treated at the cardiac unit of Gozo General Hospital yesterday and transferred to Mater Dei Hospital by helicopter this morning (see separate story).
His condition is critical but stable.

Get well soon, your Excellency. You are such a nice part of our lives that you seem to be part of our family. We have grown under your spiritual leadership and teachings which flow so rapidly from your rich treasures. You are always so keen to share your knowledge with all of us where that apt joke is never missing.
May God keep His hands on you and on all your needs. We promise you our prayers for all that He deems best for you.

It's not Mons Grech who's ill, but the Bishop Emeritus Mons Cauchi! We wish him a speedy recovery and more good health to Bishop Grech!

Our sympathies go to both bishops. Let us hope Bishop Emeritus Cauchi returns from hospital in better shape. His pronouncements have always been enlightening, AND realistic in their content and approach. The present bishop is steadily following in his footsteps.
Bishops should not be only administrators, but as Bishop Grech rightly put it, "father figures" and "teachers of the people".
