Care orders in last year amounted to 57

A total of 57 care orders were issued in the last 12 months.

Family Minister Dolores Cristina told Ċensu Galea that 35 care orders were issued in relation to children from Birżebbuġa, Bormla (Cospicua), Ħamrun, Paola, Qawra, Qormi, Sliema, St Paul’s Bay, Valletta, Victoria (Gozo), Żabbar, Żebbuġ (Malta) and Żejtun.

An additional 22 care orders were issued for children who were unaccompanied by adults and who arrived from Eritrea, Ethiopia, the Ivory Coast, Somalia and Syria.

Answering another question by the same MP, Home Affairs Minister Carm Mifsud Bonnici minister said that between January 1, 2006 and October 19 this year, there were 167 fathers who requested custody of their children born out of a relation with women to whom they were not married.

The highest number of requests, 46, were filed in 2009.
