Two people have died and 29 made ill by an outbreak of Legionnaires’ disease in Madrid.

The city Health Department said yesterday more than 230 air conditioning systems in the capital have been inspected in an attempt to locate the source of the outbreak.

Two men have died from the disease, one on October 19 and the other on October 24.

Of the 29 people being treated, 21 are in hospitals.

Legionnaires’ disease is named for an outbreak at an American Legion convention in 1976 where 34 people died.
