Two North Africans were apprehended by the police shortly after they fled the scene of a car crash they were involved in close to Portes des Bombes, Floriana, yesterday evening.
The driver and the passenger in the car, which was extensively damaged after it crashed into a tree and a low wall, were lucky to escape serious injury.
They were, however, treated by a medical team accompanying an ambulance that was called after the two men were stopped by the police. They were then taken to Mater Dei Hospital.
Sources said that after the spectacular crash, the two men managed to get out of the car unaided and fled. They started running when an eyewitness asked them if they needed help, the sources added.
A search was immediately launched by the police and members of the mobile squad spotted them walking near the White Brothers Garage close to the power station in Marsa. They were first taken to the scene of the accident and then to hospital under police escort.
The police are investigating to establish why the two fled the scene after the crash.
