Kuwait will open an embassy manned by a resident ambassador and a team of diplomats, 22 years after the previous one closed down.
The decision to re-open the embassy was spurred by a request by about 140 Kuwaiti students in a meeting with a high-ranking Kuwait delegation visiting Malta, government sources said.
The delegation met the Kuwaiti students who expressed their wish for an embassy based in Malta because the one in Rome was not sufficient, the sources said. The two countries are also looking into setting up direct flights between them.
Prime Minister Lawrence Gonzi visited Kuwait in April at the head of a delegation that included Foreign Minister Tonio Borg, Finance Minister Tonio Fenech and a number of businessmen.
