A boost for classic and racing car collectors
Photo: Matthew Mirabelli
Collectors of classic and racing cars were given something to smile about in the Budget.
The government promised a new “unique licence plate” concept for collectors allowing them to only pay for one licence for their entire collection. Besides, they will only have to pay a small processing fee.
Until now they were paying a licence for every car they owned.
The government also removed the registration tax of 6.5 per cent on sports vehicles that may be used only on racing tracks and other sites authorised by Transport Malta.

The Hon. Minister of Finance, Mr. Tonio Fenech, and all the Hon. Ministers concerned deserve the appreciation of the motor sports community for these measures. In addition to well to do people, ordinary citizens have classic cars as well, purchased and maintained through hard work and financial sacrifice. These cars are part of Malta’s motoring heritage.
Racing cars that are not used on public roads are fairly expensive, but that does not mean that all owners are rich. Those who are using these cars in Italy are contributing to sports tourism and many of them are bringing back excellent results – much better than other sports disciplines!
Incidentally it appears that the south of Malta is going to get another football ground and swimming pool. Good luck to them. When is the motor sports community going to have its motor racing facility – something promised by all the major political parties over the past 40 years or more?

Dear Mr Schembri,
All i can tell you is this, A relative of mine is a hard working , taxpaying man with a family to keep .He is not rich and has his own family difficulties to put up with as well. He happens to be crazy about cars. Is that a sin ? Can he be judged for that ? He would give his right arm to see his family happy. So what , he owns a couple of old cars that make him happy at the end of the day.
He is not a richman with luxary cars in his garage , as you put it ! These guys work hard to earn money for the hobby, I am glad the government has helped out a bit to keep these peoples' hobby alive. They organise rallies , funs raising events and shows that the general public enjoys on a sunday morning. They share their hobby for everyones' benefit abd YOU'RE complaining.
I too have a hoby that would really benefit from some government support , but I don't go around bashing other people's interest.
PEACE !

Yeah, save them money because these poor chaps don't only afford a family car but also have the money and garage space to keep these exquisite collectables!
Make the rich richer while the common people who only have one car per family must now pay higher costs for fuel.
