Updated: Coffins float on floodwaters in Qormi!
Empty coffins were seen floating in floodwaters in Qormi this morning after an undertaker's store was flooded.
Qormi was among the worst hit areas of the heavy downpours overnight, with several cars being carried away by the water and being extensively damaged. The water even halted a bus, which itself was flooded. (see separate stories)
The above picture was taken by Richard Hili. Also note the damaged white car.

hey look the undertaker's bussiness is going down the river!!!! ...but if the Qormi residents and the Undertaker want to cash in on this i suggest they should have a "coffin race" every year at this time of year where entrants design coffins to ther like and enter the race !!....you heard it here from me first !!!...this would be a fun event for everyone at the time of Holloween and it would be a first i think ....

Coffin nearly brand new, slightly waterlogged; prospective occupant would'nt mind some rising damp !

If Coffins would think and talk I Think they would say loudly: "Yee hah off we go to have some fun before those creatures put a person in us and store us underground".

All the coffins need is a pair of oars and then some one to sing ''row row down the coffin gently down the stream!''

I have just returned from Marsa, to check on the floodwater at the Millenia. I counted 6 coffins passing by. Even though there was a lot of debris clocking the galleries under Aldo Moro Road, you should have seen the cofffins speeding though. Only one was in perfect condition, still as polished and as good as new. The others were damaged but definetly the coffin outlines where still all there. The coffins navigated the channel at a much faster rate than the tree branches which eventually blocked the apertures, I left as some officials were usign a small Gaffa to open the blockage on the Marsa sportground side. But there was a lot of work to be done to clear all the blocking debris. Let us hope it does not rain cats and dogs as it did yesterday

Dear Anna
The gum trees roots as you described them, their roots are not close to the surface, on the contrary their roots are very deep to be able to survive for a long time without water, of-course you always find the exception of a weak one mainly those one’s that have been planted by people because the self seeded one’s have a very strong tap root that is used both as anchor and water supply.

Halloween Regatta for budget day....what was more frightening this morning was a large quantity of water spouts emanating from a high masonry wall just opposite MCAST in Paola.
This water was pouring out with considerable force, and if the worse comes to the worse, there are cars in the daily traffic jam and MCAST students going to lectures. The wall is in bad shape and considerably eroded. Can someone please take note and repair the garden wall which I presume belongs to the Gaddafi gardens before a tragedy ensues.

Some incredibly tasteless comments - especially the one about Natalie Wood.
At least with all this rain, the water-rates should come down.
Malta's newest tourist attraction - white-water-rafting!!? In coffins? Now THAT would be 'only in Malta'.

I've lived in Balzan for over 40 years and I have never seen it flooding to that extent! This is a disgrace...the water ways are being blocked by numerous buildings... Yes floods happen in Australia, etc Mr Joe Azzopardi, but I've never had the inconvenience of not being able to go through a street, road, avenue, highway and boulevard in Australia. Usually it's the Gum trees that fall, because their roots are very close to the surface. Fire personnel are quick to move and remove these trees etc. Besides Australia is a continent and measures are taken seriously. Please don't compare Malta to Australia! G'day!
electroman
Oct 25th 2010, 12:28
you are right about not comparing malta to austalia but also remember that we are not equipped for this sort of weather, this happens ones in a decade so do not expect that our existent drain system can handel a rain flow of this sort. as you said australia is a continent and is economicaly much more stable than malta, moreover its a tropical region so it is equipped for the worst.

Very tasteless comment about Natalie Wood. Not funny at all !!!
Its ok to have fun but when its at the expense of someone's dearly beloved who happened to die tragically it is not right at all.
Once again some people show their sheer ignorance . Would be a lot better if these people showed a bit of respect instead.
