Foreign Affairs Minister Tonio Borg is expected to reiterate Malta’s support for Serbia’s EU membership bid when he takes part in the General Affairs and Foreign Affairs Councils in Brussels tomorrow.
The agenda of the councils includes the preparation of the European Council to be attended by heads of government next week.
Serbia’s application for membership will be discussed on the recommendation of the Belgian Presidency.
Dr Borg said Malta believes Serbia’s membership will serve both the interest of the Western Balkans and Europe as long as this is done in a “structured and manageable” manner.
The Foreign Affairs Council will also discuss three upcoming summits, namely those between the EU and the US, Ukraine and the Union for the Mediterranean, and EU and the Union for the Mediterranean.
