The Elisabeth Mann Borgese (EMB) Bursary of the International Ocean Institute (IOI) was recently awarded to geographer Alicia Said.

Ms Said will be using the bursary, consisting of a sum of €3,593, to investigate the application of Marine Protected Areas in Malta, placing special emphasis on Ċirkewwa.

“This coastal region is popular among divers and in urgent need of protection if it is to be properly sustained,” said Ms Said. “Malta’s coastal areas are exposed to high levels of human activity and so require protection through effective frameworks for sustainability.

“This study will present the IOI’s philosophy of the ‘common heritage of mankind’, and explain its possible application as a powerful principle that fosters a holistic approach towards protecting our marine natural heritage.”

The EMB Bursary is financed through the IOI’s Women, Youth and the Sea Programme and was established as a means of demonstrating recognition to Malta for hosting the IOI Headquarters and providing facilities for staff and offices at the University’s Msida campus.

The Bursary also constitutes a further recognition and acknowledgement of the role of Prof. E Mann Borgese, founder of IOI, and of her considerable achievements.
