The government’s annual Budget has arrived and it is also high time that the disability pension given to persons with disabilities who qualify for such pension is revised. Currently it is below 60 per cent of the national minimum wage and obviously too low to enable such persons to meet the expenses of daily living to a good level.
Such persons in Malta form part of the 17 per cent of European people who live below the poverty line. This year has been designated the European Year for Combating Poverty and Social Exclusion and the National Parents’ Society for Persons with Disability believes that justice needs to be done and the pension reviewed to be at least equal to the minimum wage.
Qualifying disabled persons have additional expenses due to their disabilities and these should not continue to be a burden on their family members and carers.
