In the first match played last Sunday, Floriana Young Stars beat Sliema Hotsticks 1-0 to book a semi-final berth in the Challenge Cup.

Sliema may have forged ahead on 11 minutes when Dalli fumbled a good chance with only the goalkeeper to beat. In the 22nd minute, Floriana’s Mark Camilleri saw his powerful drag flick from a short corner action well saved by Cole.

Three minutes past the half hour, Sliema were awarded a penalty stroke but Dylan Lentini’s soft flick was saved by Abdilla.

Nine minutes into the second half, Lentini’s hit at goal was cleared off the goal line by Mark Camilleri.

Floriana scored what proved to be the winner on 44 minutes. A blunder by the Sliema goalkeeper allowed Clive Williams to plant the ball into an empty goal.

Having already won the first leg, Floriana administered their lead till the end.

In the second match, Qormi demolished White Hart to the tune of 4-0 and secured top spot in Group A.

White Hart started well, Tua fluffing an inviting scoring chance after four minutes. The same player forced his way through the Qormi defence only for Paul Torpiano to miss his inviting cross with the goal at his mercy.

On 18 minutes, Qormi went ahead. A defensive error by Simon Agius allowed Keith Calleja to advance before beating Vassallo Agius in White Hart’s goal. A minute later, Qormi made it 2-0.

Again, White Hart paid dearly for their lack of concentration as Steve Tanti’s quickly-taken free hit from the dotted line rolled to John Borg who placed the ball in the corner of the net.

After the resumption, White Hart pressed forward, winning a series of short corners which were all dealt with by the Qormi defence.

After White Hart’s initial flurry, most of the action was restricted to midfield with Qormi being more dangerous on the counter.

On 62 minutes, Qormi sealed their win thanks to Tanti who scored a fine goal after exchanging passes with Keith Calleja.

Two minutes later, Calleja got his second goal, beating Vassallo Agius with a neat flick at the far corner.
