A drug addict who raided his mother’s jewellery collection and sold off more than €2,300 worth of it to fuel his habit was yesterday conditionally discharged for two years.

Andrè Borg, 23, of Naxxar, stole the jewellery from his mother’s house over the last two months. He had sold off most of the gold he had taken from her and only had a couple of earrings left by the time the police were called in.

His mother had refused to forgive him and left the police with no option but to arraign him under arrest.

He pleaded guilty to stealing before Magistrate Giovanni Grixti.

After taking into consideration his early guilty plea and that he had a clean police record, the magistrate conditionally discharged him for two years. Police Inspector Paul Bond prosecuted.
