The San Michel Malta Junior Open was played recently at the Marsa Sports Club.

Bernard Cassar Torregiani again proved to be the country’s top junior player after his successful participation in the U-14 and U-16 age group competitions.

In the U-16 final, Cassar Torregiani beat Patrick Georgiev and in the decisive U-14 match, he had the better of his brother Matthew.

Ben Farrugia showed good promise on his way to winning the U-10 and U-12 events.

The Under-12 final, in particular, kept those present on the edge of their seats, Farrugia eventually beating Zack Ciappara in three close sets.

Farrugia also made it a double by beating the equally-talented Miguel Galea in the U-10 final.

The events for girls were also interesting.

The U-14 category was won by Rebecca McCarthy who beat Georgia Farrugia Sacco in the final.

This contest was balanced with McCarthy hitting back from 0-3 down in the third set to win 6-3.

Farrugia Sacco, however, was on the winning end in the U-16 final. She beat Alexia Cassar in three sets, the last one going the winner’s way 6-4.

The girl’s U-10 competition was won by the upcoming Helene Pelicano.

Participants in this age bracket were placed in a group and played each other on a round robin basis.

Pelicano won all her matches to finish ahead of Martina De-manuele, Emily Lightfoot and Nicole Meli Bellizzi.

Bernard and Matthew Cassar Torregiani were the winning pair in doubles, beating Mark Schranz and Patrick Georgiev in the final.

David Farrugia Sacco, Malta Tennis Federation president, attended the prize-giving ceremony. Also present were Open organisers Antoinette Pace, Louise Dowling and Anna Gusman.
