Old buildings which have been converted into top-notch establishments for guests dominate the best hotels list in the Good Hotel Guide 2011, issued yesterday. Those making it into the top 10 include a Grade II listed Gothic castle in North Yorkshire which was named Family Hotel of the Year.

A renovated 18th century villa was the Irish Heritage House of the Year, while a 16th century farmhouse took the Welsh Country House title.

The guide said: “The winners vary greatly in size and style. What they have in common is how well they look after their guests.”
