Nadur council is collaborating with Caritas Malta to organise a candle-lighting event as part of the Caritas campaign ‘Ilqa l-Isfida: Ġib il-Faqar fix-Xejn’ (accept the challenge: eradicate poverty), today, the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty.
This year is the European Year for Combating Poverty and Social Exclusion and to acknowledge this, Nadur will be joining several other European localities which are taking part in the ‘10 Million Stars’ event organised by Caritas Europa.
Nadur mayor Miriam Portelli said the event intends to show the solidarity of the people of Nadur with those in need.
Nadur parish priest Mgr Jimmy Xerri is working with the local council, and will be appealing to parishioners to take candles with them to be lit during the activity at 6 p.m. at St Peter and St Paul Square. During this activity, a collection will be made to channel funds to people living in poverty.
The Nadur Youth Council will be collecting signatures throughout the day for a Caritas Europa petition against poverty and social exclusion, which will be presented to the European Commission.
