The recent rescue of 33 Chilean miners, who spent 69 days in the bowels of a mine in Copiapo, was celebrated across the world, and President George Abela shared in this joy by writing to the country’s president.

“We are very relieved and happy to witness live on the news media the rescue of the 33 miners,” Dr Abela wrote in a letter to Chilean President Sebastián Piñera.

Writing in his name and on behalf of the government and people of Malta, Dr Abela congratulated Mr Piñera, especially the rescued miners and their families, as well as all those involved in the difficult rescue operation.

“We believe that the Chilean people have every reason to feel joyous and proud at their achievement after the long 69-day ordeal of the miners and their families,” he said.

This gripping story – which had a happy ending after the men were freed from a mine where they were trapped – has touched many.

Dr Abela brought up the subject again during the Elderly Person of the Year award presentation on Friday.

He spoke about the miners’ determination to live despite the odds after the main shaft at the San Jose gold and copper mine in northern Chile collapsed on August 5, trapping the miners more than 2,200 feet below ground.

Dr Abela said the world celebrated one of the most spectacular rescues in history.
