Research has shown a link between physical activity and decreased breast problems, the president of the Breast Care Support Group said yesterday, after the launch of a diary promoting a healthy lifestyle.
The publication, Make Healthy Choices – Breast Health Is Up To You, was presented during an event at Mater Dei Hospital attended, among others, by the Prime Minister’s wife Kate Gonzi, Michelle Muscat, the wife of the Leader of the Opposition, and Violet de Marco, the wife of the late President Emeritus Guido de Marco.
The group’s Europa Donna Malta’s yearly campaign, organised on Breast Health Day as part of Breast Awareness Month, aims to encourage girls and women to commit to daily lifestyle choices that can make a difference to their future breast health.
Group president Gertrude Abela, a breast cancer survivor of 11 years who volunteers twice a week at the hospital’s breast clinic, spoke very highly of the staff there.
Ms Abela stressed the importance of self-examination, regular mammograms and for women to promptly seek medical help if they noticed something unusual.
The group, launched in 1989, is mainly made up of survivors who provide peer support to women suffering from breast cancer. They also offer one-to-one counselling with trained psychologists.
