A Qormi man, who was given a suspended jail term after robbing a man of €1,400 in cash, had his sentence converted into an effective jail term on appeal by the Attorney General.

Keith Camilleri, 27, from Qormi, who is serving time on theft related charges, was found guilty of robbing Riccardo Cremona on November 9, 2006, in a theft during which he used pepper spray and made off with the money.

The Attorney General argued in the appeal that the Magistrates’ Court could not have handed down a suspended jail term when Mr Camilleri was already serving time.

Mr Justice David Scicluna upheld his request and converted the 18 month suspended term into an effective one.
